How does local giving work when you live in two countries?

This is a question about community foundations, and I hope it is fine to ask it here even though I am far from Placer County.

In Denmark I give to two local things every year, the sailing club for kids in my town and the food bank, and it is simple because I know the people and the tax part is automatic. Since this summer I also live part of the year in Guardamar, on the Spanish coast. I learned the town street by street before buying, reading listings on https://alegria-realestate.com/ through the whole winter, so I know where the school and the market are, but I know nothing about who does the good work there.

What I see so far: in Denmark the information is all in one place. In Spain it seems to go more through the church, the town hall, and small associations with a Facebook page.

For people who work with a foundation like this one: if a newcomer wants to give locally in a town where he does not know anyone yet, where would you tell him to begin, and how would you check that a small association is serious?
